Create

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Create and you make a space around you for the type of friends you desire. You become the light that attracts the other creative moths.

Create what? Music and performances and books and songs and anything else you can imagine.

Create because you are lonely and want to be around like minded souls.

Creative moths are attracted to the fire of creativity.

2 Day Challenge: Morning Routine v.0.1

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

I’m experimenting with morning routines and wanted to give this one a try:

  • Get up immediately with the alarm
  • Turn on light
  • Drink a glass of water
  • morning pages / eat breakfast
  • exercise for 20 minutes
  • Shower/Shave/teeth
  • Organize/clarify my “ideas binder” for 20 minutes

This routine wouldn’t work for the days where I have to be up crazy early to teach, but I think it might work for days when I have more time in the morning. (I can drop the 20 minutes of exercise on the days I teach if I need to.) I think it’s also important not to do any reading of blogs, or other computer work before this routine is complete as those tend to distract me.

This routine makes the statement that “My mental (morning pages) and physical (exercise) health are the most important things in my life. If I don’t have those then I have nothing, so I begin my day committed to my health.” On the days when I eventually have to teach my plan is to use the gym facility at school. I might even be able to add a yoga or other class in there as time and finances permit.

It might not be a perfect routine, but I’ll give it a go and see how it works.

2 Day Challenge
Start date: Tomorrow

Quote of the Week: 8/28/06

Monday, August 28th, 2006

“In my experience, those who do not like you fall into two categories: the stupid, and the envious. The stupid will like you in five years time, the envious never.” (John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester in The Libertine)

Great line. Wonderful performance by Johnny Depp.

Everything in your life is either a benefit or an opportunity for growth.

30 Day Check-in: Acting

Monday, August 21st, 2006

A host of milestones seem to have passed me by this last week. Saturday was the 30th day of my acting challenge. As I tally things up, it looks like I…

  • Went on 2 auditions
  • Saw 2 plays
  • Responded to 9 ads in Backstage
  • Read 5 plays and started a 6th
  • Mailed the soap letters

I like being able to look back and see exactly what I’ve done to forward the different areas of my career. It can be very difficult sometimes to see the progress that’s happening. Alot of times things happen behind the scenes, and unseen forces might be moving things in your direction without you knowing about it. Careers in the arts seem to rely very heavily on he whole “sowing seeds” metaphor. Thus the abundunce of overnight successes that were 20 years in the making.

At least if I’m tracking my actions it’s a tangible reminder to myself that I am doing something to make my life better, even if it’s in small ways and in baby steps. My acting actions are the seeds that I sow.

30 Day Check-in: New Exercise Challenge

Monday, August 21st, 2006

This past Saturday was the 30th day of my New Exercise Challenge. I did pretty well the first two weeks with the “20 minutes a day” part, but the last two weeks have been mostly about walking. I stayed within my parameters so I feel like it’s been a successful challenge. Mostly what I’ve learned is how challenging it can be to stay fit. It’s so easy to let the day slip away without exercising. The last week especially I found myself taking the “path of least resistance” and walking a half mile before bed.

I’m going to give the whole “challenge” part of this a break for a while. I’ll continue to track my exercise routine here.

60 Day Check-in: TV Challenge

Monday, August 21st, 2006

Apparently this past Monday was also my 60th day without TV. All the things I said in my 30 Day Check-in still hold true.

I know myself well enough to know that I need another 30 days with this one to make it an unshakeable habit.

Start date: Tuesday, 8/15/06
Next check-in date: Wednesday, 9/13/06

90 Day Check-in: Practice

Monday, August 21st, 2006

This past Monday (August 14th) was my 90th consecutive day of practicing at least one instrument a day for 20 minutes. I can’t stress enough how positive this experience has been. First 30 days, then 60 days, and now 90… I’ve seen an incredible amount of progess in my playing in that time. The emphasis on the trombone these past 30 days has especially begun to pay dividends.

I’m ready to let go of this as an official “30 Day” task, but plan to continue the 20 minute daily minimum and will continue to track things here.

1 Day Multi-Challenge: 8/18/06

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

I will write my morning pages before 9 a.m. today. complete

I will do my exercise before 9 a.m. today. complete (finished by 9:30 a.m. / see below)

I will complete my acting actions before 9 p.m. today. complete (finished by 11:45 a.m. / see below)

I will visit Staples/Jennifer Sofabeds/Bookstore before noon today. complete (was out the door a little after noon / see below)

I will complete at least 60 minutes of practice on the trombone before 5 p.m. today. complete

I will complete at least 100 minutes on the book before 5 p.m. today. Finished 50 minutes by 5:30 p.m. (see bel0w)

Notes to Self:

  • To do all the things I have to do before 9 a.m., I need to start by 7:50 a.m.
  • If I do all my trombone practicing in the afternoon, I’ll have to start by 2:20 p.m.
  • If I do all my work on the book in the afternoon, I’ll have to start by 3:20 p.m.

–update: 5:39 p.m.–
I had a pretty full day today but scheduling really got thrown off. My acting actions today took way longer than the 20 minutes I’d originally allotted. This started a ripple effect which rolled into the afternoon. Not a total loss, though. The acting things I did really needed to be done, and I still got some practicing done in the afternoon, even if I didn’t get to sing.
